just to emphasise the point, I looked up "contemporary fiction" and got three quite different defintions in my first three hits
"Contemporary fiction is the term literary critics use to describe literature written between 1990 and the present." www.masterclass.com/articles/contemporary-fiction
"Books in the contemporary fiction genre are made up of stories that could happen to real people in real settings" book-genres.com/contemporary-fiction-definition/ but then somewhat dubiously lists an Agatha Christie book as an example, but my guess is that sci-fi might be out
