It's still used as a radio broadcast will make it out into the ocean (especially long wave) where DAB won't
small fishing vessels can't carry much more than a standard VHF marine radio but long wave signals can literally be picked up with a fairly normal radio for miles. As the BBC are slowly shutting down the LW band its only a matter of time before it will just be on FM/DAB but old school mariners like to use it as a way to check the data they are getting is good.
