Well it’s a question of semantics then.
To me, a forty year old going out with a seventeen year old is 100% nonce. Is he a paedophile? Not in the eyes of the law, no, so I’d be very careful about calling him one. However as far as I’m concerned, if he’ll fuck a seventeen year old, he’d be only too happy to fuck a fifteen year old. Sexual attraction isn’t based on someone’s date of birth, it’s based on how they look and act. If you like them very young you’re a nonce, if you like them so young they’re underage, you’re a paedophile. Nonces are all too often paedophiles.

Technically, you aren't a paedophile if you're fucking 15 year olds either.
Not that it in any way makes it okay, but categorising somebody who likes fucking underage adolescents in the same category as somebody who likes fucking literal infants feels wrong to me. They're both bad, but one is clearly much, much worse.
I'd argue that an adult who has a penchant for adolescents isn't necessarily a psychopath, an adult who has a penchant for toddlers almost certainly is - you'd have to be, surely.

There are definitely nonces who are worse than other nonces.
Just as some rapists are worse than other rapists. Some 15 year olds are, if you’ll excuse the idiom, ripe for plucking, some aren’t. In this country a line has been drawn at 16. Technically you’re wrong, as it is the law that imposes the technicalities.
