It's been a shambles for quite a while
115 prisoners were mistakenly released in the last year of the previous government, but it's only an issue now, apparently.
I recently found out that it's down to individual jails to work out when a prisoner should be released rather than a central body. With overcrowding, sentences have been cut across the board but the whole system is fucked and prisons have small teams who are overstretched so it's hardly a surprise that they screw up. Screws? See what I did!?

It has always been an issue.
But that issue becomes a monumental fuckup of epic proportions when one of the prisoners mistakenly released is the same individual who's arrest sparked a series of riots and significant media coverage, and then not a week later, another foreign national sex offender (who is also technically in the country illegally) gets released from the same bloody prison.
You'd have thought that after Kebatu's release, the prison would have taken every possible precaution to make sure that a similar incident didn't occur in in the succeeding weeks, never mind days. That's the biggest issue, in my opinion. Not so much that the prison is leaking like a particularly efficient sieve, but that the governors don't actually seem to give a single fuck. Apparently Kebatu went back to the Prison a number of times after his erroneous release, and the fuckers kept turning him away! Absolute madness.

I'm watching a doccy on the iPlayer about that woman guard who bonked a prisoner
and the video got out and it ends up being a bit of an expose of the whole system. Fucking hell, it's absolutely fucked up the bum with a cactus. Totally shot to hell. Corrupt, disfunctional, violent, abusive - for the staff as well as the prisoners.
The only bit we see of it is the screw ups with prisoner releases but frankly that's the tip of the iceberg.

It doesn't surprise me at all though, really.
You'd have to be a fucking wrongun' to have aspirations of working as a Prison Officer.
The field is going to be full of the sorts of people so unsuitable for a position of responsibility and authority that even the Police couldn't take them, people with aspirations of getting shagged by an inmate, or people recovering from severe childhood bullying traumas that have decided to enact their revenge on the types that made their early years hell.
About the only people I can imagine wanting that job for any kind of legitimate reason would be ex-RMP/RNP/RAFP coming from a similar background in the forces - but I doubt many of them would be joining the system as entry-level officers unless they were utter wronguns in their previous positions, too.
And the pay is absolutely fucking shit.
I mean, it's not their fault that all these people are being released. But I can't imagine it's only the bottom rung of the ladder that's fucked. I imagine there's a whole lot of internal promotion going on in that part of the system.

It is easier than actually sorting out real problems.

I must say, it's so refreshing to read such a reasoned, progressive response.
It's a damning reflection on our society when we're so explicitly focused on this poor man's sexual offence and attempted burglary convictions for no other reason than the fact that he wasn't born here.
And then on top of that, we use a technicality on his visitor visa to boot him back out of the country! What has become of this once-welcoming nation?
It wouldn't surprise me at all if the flashing and robbing were all coping mechanisms to deal with the absolutely appalling casual prejudice and racism this individual faced. We should be offering this bloke an honorary citizenship for all the hardship he's faced since setting foot on English soil.

It also used dog whistle tactics appealing to xenophobia in the community with a spate of articles around feckless european immigrants taking britain for a ride. However, as the critics and economists who they dismissed as Project Fear predicted, the opposite happened.
Since Brexit. successive governments have posted deficits, and struggled to publicly fund critical services, like the NHS or in this case the HM Prison service.
Instead of looking at why not funding public services properly is responsible for the enshittification of the UK, that spending on health and social protections as a share of gdp fell year on year from 2012 to 2020 under the tories while corporation tax almost halved in the same period and the share of tax the top 50% and particularly the top 10% of earners paid fell while the bottom 50%s burden rose a corresponding amount, you've once again focussed on outrage bait that seems to always involve brown immigrants. I'm sure that brown muslim aspect is purely a repeated coincidence as other foreigners, including illegal australians, also commit crimes, and you and tony, assuming you're not sock puppets of one another, have posted a series of links on b3ta on boat people and ones like this that echo all the outrage bait about freeloading foreigners coming over to get treatments that was shared in lead-up to the brexit vote.

on an unrelated note, and I know this is minority opinion, but I don't find what prince andrew did that reprehensible
he's basically fucked a 17 and half year old prostitute, with the age of consent of being 17 where he fucked her. It's grubby, but prostitution is rife despite being illegal in all states but nevada, and it's unlikely he'd get a conviction as it wasn't done in exchange for compensation, just for that weasel epstein to get an in with him. with a possible future blackmail sting. He's a single pointless royal who like to fuck. If he wants to go to prozzers that's his business. The fact that giuffre was groomed at 16 by Epstein and maxwell and whored out to johns based on who knows what relationship isn't Andrews business, and an awful lot of prostitutes are forced into it anyway, as our sockcooker who spent years brothel creeping in thailand should know. They're often kidnapped from their villages and forced to suck off sunburnt poms in oasis singlets under debt servitude, rather than flown around in private jets. From andrew point of view epstein was just a discreet pimp businessman who came with some pretty high faluting recommendations who was willing to let him fuck for free, to a man used to getting freebies everywhere he goes.
