I don't know
but it does seem that some of the ideas that people have run counter to their own interests and are quite consequential, like brexit, maga, or global warming not being real. If anything people are a bit better educated than the past, but with the internet that's been far outpaced by the sophistication of manipulation by vested interests, so the increasing desperation of ordinary people is channelled towards their own ends
