You're quite right. Rotoscoping lightsabres is a right pain. You have to mask the blade every second, and there are 25 frames per second - this clip took me about a week, maybe 40 or 50 hours. I added some small flashes when the blades touch. The sound takes a while too, getting the sound to match the movement.
That same department have asked me to make them a new lightsabre film in exchange for some beers and a lunch - I told them to do one! :)

why don't you
motion track the handle? then just anchor the blades, then all you will have to do is some manual rotation...much quicker

Its fast and quite good really. assuming you have After Effects that is.
BTW - in Star Wars land, sabre is saber :)
edit: and in my land, plug-in is plugion. Apparently.
