
You're quite right. Rotoscoping lightsabres is a right pain. You have to mask the blade every second, and there are 25 frames per second - this clip took me about a week, maybe 40 or 50 hours. I added some small flashes when the blades touch. The sound takes a while too, getting the sound to match the movement.
That same department have asked me to make them a new lightsabre film in exchange for some beers and a lunch - I told them to do one! :)

motion track the handle? then just anchor the blades, then all you will have to do is some manual rotation...much quicker
