
That's a fairly advanced model.
the first mobile phone I used looked exactly like a car battery with a phone handset on top. The handset was connected via a curly phone cable to the battery. It only worked in Manchester city center.

You could only used the while standing underneath 'rabbit' signs at certain places where there was a hotspot - like post offices, supermarkets - basically anywhere that was almost guranteed to have a cheaper and much more reliable payphone.
But then you couldn't call your mates and say "i'm calling you from a mobile! I'm actually standing outside right now!"
