that's got to be around 1986 surely? I remember a guy carrying one similar to that around then, base unit may have been a bit bigger (or I was just smaller)

1986/7 for those things. In 1990 I remember people having those Motorola flip phones with a pull out aerial - so cool at the time!

That's a fairly advanced model.

the first mobile phone I used looked exactly like a car battery with a phone handset on top. The handset was connected via a curly phone cable to the battery. It only worked in Manchester city center.

This is a normal post I remember rabbit phones
You could only used the while standing underneath 'rabbit' signs at certain places where there was a hotspot - like post offices, supermarkets - basically anywhere that was almost guranteed to have a cheaper and much more reliable payphone.

But then you couldn't call your mates and say "i'm calling you from a mobile! I'm actually standing outside right now!"
