I didn't know Goethe was pronounced Go-ur-ter until the Al Murray in Germany programme on BBC Four.
(And I did follow the maths - I choked on Pure & App Maths A Level - woo! My brain still works 28 years later)
Similarly, a German colleague - despite living here for years - thought pomegranate was pronounced pommey-gran-ah-ta
