
They really didn't bother with blocking in those days did they? I've seen modern matches ended by MUCH less than some of the blows they're taking in that match.
I remember seeing a clip of Archie Moore VS. Rocky Marciano. It was literally like watching Rocky. No blocking, no weaving, just a total, utter slug fest. If I remember correctly, Moore was one of only two boxers to knock Marciano down.

It's true to say that quite a lot landed though (loads of jabs), especially as they started to fatigue towards the end.
One thing to note however is how they roll with punches, it's not just about landing but landing heavily. if you're leaning away or moving with the punch it'll probably cause less harm than first appears.
edit: also lots of boxers (modern and old) will keep their hands low to allow them to counter more fluidly. sergio martinez for instance.
