If that was the case (that they wanted to protect developers and stifle piracy)
why wouldn't they have come up with a better cover story than "all your personal details have been stolen".
Maybe with one saying... oh, I dunno... "we're trying to stamp out piracy and protect the intellectual property of our developers by taking the PSN network offline for a week or so. Please bare with us as we believe this is necessary and beneficial to the industry as a whole."
