Makes you think who Sony are really trying to protect; their customers in the home, or the developers who are selling through them.

The other theory I've heard was that the update server may have been compromised as part of turning all the PS3s into a massive botnet (once you have control of the updates (the VERY hard part), not all that hard to do, just make them look somewhere else for new patches and the only thing Sony can do is to make everyone actually do something on the machine to fix it).
This is already enough of a complete fuckup without the extra theories flying around.

I've seen enough forums to see everything blamed, from Microsoft to Doctor Who for the PSN being down.
It's just that with this case, wouldn't the 3rd party developers etc be just a bit completely pissed if they knew Sony were aware of them allowing free software to be accessed by the hacked-ps3 community? Unless Sony sort this out (among all other probs they got) they won't be able to put the PSN back on.

whilst plenty of piracy happens, and always will, the people interested in it and able to take advantage of it, are fairly marginal. Compare this to the loss of revenue and face from making it unavailable to the VAST majority of users who wouldn't abuse the system either by morals or by knowledge, it's no way enough to make them take such evasive action. Sounds like some hackers just trying to big themselves up for the sake of it.

If that was the case, why would you shut down the entire network and not just restrict access to the dev servers? Why take it down for so long? Sony's losses from not having the PSN Store up and running for the last couple of weeks would surely vastly outstrip any losses from the piracy scenario.
The botnet thing sounds far more likely to me. If you think the update servers are compromised you've got to do a massive code review to ensure that nothing got added on the sly.

at least for the usual illiterate kids who just want to pirate games. It was a tiny minority of a tiny minority using the free games exploit.
The best thing about this whole fiasco was the glorious, phoenix-like ascendancy of UK:Resistance.

just having a larf re:our discussion. no one has said it about you - blimey, lay off the speed dude, it makes ya paranoid ;)
i could start a rumour that you have a "wedding dress" fetish, and that's why you were so into the royal wedding if you like?
(i knew a girl once who went out with a guy from where i worked, and she told me he had a wedding dress in the wardrobe which he told her he liked to wear occasionally while at home. nothing wrong with x-dressing imho, but still, he was a very manly man, stubbly, dark, chubby etc.)

I was happy shooting random people in the head on RR Undead Nightmare. No more of that for the time being.

admittedly I thought you had to pay for the Gold package at £5 per month so initally did that but apparently you don't although it was a monumental pain in the arse to get Microsoft to downgrade my account from Gold to the free service.

All of the games online are filled with sick & hateful kids who OD on Haribo and rape their mothers. I didn't want to have to share that with you but I've seen it, as I am one.

why wouldn't they have come up with a better cover story than "all your personal details have been stolen".
Maybe with one saying... oh, I dunno... "we're trying to stamp out piracy and protect the intellectual property of our developers by taking the PSN network offline for a week or so. Please bare with us as we believe this is necessary and beneficial to the industry as a whole."
