Because there's Essex and there's Essex.
He's from Clavering, near Saffron Walden, in Essex but not far from Hertfordshire & Cambridgeshire. Being near Stansted/Cambridge it's a very expensive area to live (think Surrey stockbroker belt - it's not far off that), and fuck all like the gor blimey East End/Estuary Essex he likes to make out he's from.
