It's an interesting & valid point. However, I don't think the fact that there are self-serving, greedy, money-grabbing bastards attempting to manipulate policy negates the evil influence of religion at all. Which, typing it, is too obvious to state.
In summary, I agree with you, but think religion's malignant influence is more than a distraction...
