Well it's very similar to the 'explanation' of gravity or magnetism,
we comprehend the effects very well, and can form a perfectly useable theory based upon observation and results, and from that can pretty accurately predict the behaviour of objects affected by them, but TBH, we don't really know what it is or how it actually works, it's just, you know, it does, so we gave it a name!
I found out the other day we don't really understand how a lot of electrical properties function neither, static electricity for example, nobody knows why rubbing certain things together causes one to pass electrons to the other, we just know it does. It's a wonder we do so well using all this stuff in our tech, considering...
