my take is.....
the 'engineers' are engaged in some type of war ,hence the dead pile on the planet. The bio-chemisty is a weapon to infect humans and use them as a weapon against the 'enemy'.
The originl 'engineer' was teraforming with his DNA, split it ,sew it,a few thousand years later, humans with the same DNA make up appear, ready to be weaponised.
