I always thought that those who have "religious" oppositions to stem cell research were disagreeing with the harvesting of stem cells from embryos
this boy's proceedure was carried out with stem cells harvested from his own bone marrow. I doubt many who are against stem cell research will see this as an "oh shit, we were wrong" moment, (even if the base science behind it all was done with embyonic stem cells before they came anywhere near thinking about practical applications)
Personally I think the more reseach into stem cells, the better - the potential uses - restoring sight, hearing, movement, brain function outweigh any "against" arguement I've heard so far
