I don't think paint covered fragments of metal and burnt material hold on to finger oils that well...

They can find pieces of bombs to determine where the parts where obtain.

As in, it was this type of compound which is only manufactured by x and y etc, or was also used on this other occassion.

Rather than being able to identify it as a can of spray paint which can be bought in any number of shops. Or over the internet.

The tracing supplies is one of the primary uses of the forensic information - cross indexing purchases and the like but it's amazing how much personally identifying information (DNA, fingerprints etc.) can survive a regular explosion (sans paint).
