In our sixth form common room we used twat about with the microwave in the name of science.
We tried the grape and I seem to remember if you pushed cocktail sticks into each half it would arc quite spectacularly. Fairy lights would light up if you put a bunch of them in too. As mentioned above, CDs are very satisfying to watch.
