i spent the last year working in a secure unit with kids.
no matter how much i know it isn't a prison the kids definitely feel like it is. the first few days are the hardest. grim. :(

it's a residential unit like a young people's centre (a modern day kid's home) except it's secure.
ie. it's a locked environment and the kids lose many liberties. in england there are different units for underage offenders and for kids who need to be accommodated for "care" reasons. in scoltand we don't have detention centres for kids. secure units instead. there isn't the divide between justice for children and care for children.
