
I used to ride like that...there wasn't much I would not do on a bike.
Even then, gloves were the HAVE to HAVE safety equipment, seriously; and especially after you have had gravel scrubbed out of your hands like a scene from Threads; it's the must have safety basic. Back then everything else cost too much; and as it only lasts for one fall anyway, but gloves... they could save you daily.
One day my front wheel fell off ... hopping off a curb, FFS, of all things. Forks planted, face planted and I was lucky enough to have my teeth stitched back in, anaesthetic and my jaw wired in place that order. It was a proper ouch moment. And the brother who removed / loosened the nuts, the one that was over 10 at the time knows who did it.. don't you? I forgive you.
Having ones teeth stitched in place is really painful. Having ones relatives lean on your forehead while it happens is heartbreaking. But, due to the cunts, I still have teeth. the cunts. cunts.

I had Mongoose NX-DH, earlier bikes are proper vintage for me.
