A photo essay about a small island off Japan that was a former coal mine but completely abandoned in 1974.
A fairly long read but worth it alone for the photos, reminded me a bit of similar stuff on modern day Chernobyl.

find those dead cities fascinating. www.myseveralworlds.com/2008/05/22/photo-journal-the-haunted-pod-village-of-san-zhi/ that's one not as dramatic. They say Detroit is similar in the centre now too.

in that google have streetmapped it.
take this place:
maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Gilbo+Ave,+Detroit,+Wayne,+Michigan+48234&sll=52.969211,-1.166196&sspn=0.008839,0.01929&ie=UTF8&cd=1&geocode=FagvhwIdXD8N-w&split=0&hq=&hnear=Gilbo+Ave,+Detroit,+Wayne,+Michigan+48234&ll=42.411956,-83.01439&spn=0.004895,0.01929&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=42.411948,-83.014394&panoid=ZeYuPN6wlhR9LV9K-a_iug&cbp=11,22.66,,0,1.8
if you drive round, it's practically wilderness, but 50 years ago, all the empty space was filled with houses, it's bizarre.
