I could rant on for a good while about the timbre, texture and quality of this mans voice because he is in the top 5 soul singers of all time but I think Billy Bragg sums it up.

He was an 'also-ran' at best, just because he's dead doens't mean he's suddenly talented.

It's always sad when people die, but it's even sadder when dead people get idolised. Especially when they don't deserve it.

Miles Davis was a boring shade of blue and all that jazz.
I do like my Gil Scott Heron and lets face it he was one of the true originators of hiphop along with the last poets but i like my early soul

I guess I put miles in more as an artist than a singer.

You didn't see Sam Cooke because he's in the top 10, not the top 5. You'd also see Marlena Shaw in there.

And yes, it was hastily created in response to putting Levi Stubbs in that league rather than as a definitive list. Thanks though, you've just sent me on a Sam Cooke binge.
