I did use the right wool that they mention in the pattern....
cost about £18 to knit from a place in Malta I found from Google called Banyantreeyarns.... it's lovely in that pale grey and goes with just about anything. My Mum just found some wool/acrylic blend for about £2.69 a ball, hers took 3 x 100gr balls, whereas mine was 2 balls of Lion brand wool-ease chunky which is American and therefore a bit pricier. It's nice and soft though and doesn't make your neck itch.

there's a place a few miles from me
that has pretty much every kind of wool imaginable. i don't drive and it's a bugger to get to by bus, so i tend to wait until one of my friends can drive me up there. prices range from £0.89p to about £5, depending on what you're after. i've got through a full ball since wednesday night, so i may have to get down there soon!
