The problem with involving people directly with the political decision making process...is that it assumes that the people in question are willing (and able) to understand the issues in enough depth to make an informed decision. Most people, conversely, get their opinions from Facebook and Jeremy Clarkson, and have the depth of understanding of a concussed puppy.
These are the people who attempted to lynch a pediatrician, remember, not being clear on the distinction between "-ophile" and "-iatrician", and a large percentage of whom think that the Sun revolves around the Earth, and that humans and dinosaurs co-existed.
