This is a question Banks

Your Ginger Fuhrer froths, "I hate my bank. Not because of debt or anything but because I hate being sold to - possibly pathologically so - and everytime I speak to them they try and sell me services. Gold cards, isas, insurance, you know the crap. It drives me insane. I ALREADY BANK WITH YOU. STOP IT. YOU MAKE ME FRIGHTED TO DO MY NORMAL BANKING. I'm angry even thinking about them."

So, tell us your banking stories of woe.

No doubt at least one of you has shagged in the vault, shat on a counter or thrown up in a cash machine. Or something

I have worked in a number of banks in my time
it has been work experience, or temping.

highlights included: being left in the vault at age 15 with £100,000 in several bundles and a highlighter and instructed to draw up the front, across the top and down the back of each bundle.
While temping, I was basically the phone monkey, dealing with peoples queries and, usually, complaints. Best bit was when I had to take the phone from one of the permanent staff and explain something to an irate customer, despite having no actual knowledge of the subject. Bank cashiers are almost all idiots.

My favourite bit however was temping at a branch of Natwest on a uni campus, basically part of a team signing up freshers for their student accounts. Several bits of this were amusing: Exeter Uni students are renowned for being spoiled rich kids. I actually heard the words "no thanks I've got daddy's gold card" more than once while trying to sign people up for credit cards. There was a particularly fine crop of nubile 18 year old girls going to uni that year. Easiest (particularly on the eye) few weeks work I've ever done.

The staff of the Exeter campus branch of NatWorst
are a particularly useless bunch of cunts, in my experience - yourself presumably excluded :-)

I'm only slightly spoiled and rich, so I had to go and open a student account in said branch. Only to be told I couldn't, because I'm a foreigner and so I could only get the basic, no-frills current account. For which they then demanded an unreasonable and bizarrely specific amount of paperwork to prove I was who I said I was. Brilliantly, the guy then tried to sell me a credit card, with the argument that even if I didn't use it, it would be good to *have* one to establish a credit history. I went along with that - and the application was rejected.

Oh, that particular filthy-foreigners account also had the brilliant feature that, in order to get any overdraft at all (not interest-free because it's not the student account) you have to *deposit* £5k first. Er, missing the point of an overdraft slightly?

Still, once I saw the light and got an account with Nationwide instead, walking into the Natwest branch and closing the account was quite satisfying.

Why don't I know any of those proper, daddy's-gold-card, rich brats then? I wouldn't mind someone with more money than sense to extract some of said money from...
