My mother cooked the same way,
as did her sisters and her mother. The best reason we came up with was that all food was regularly boiled to fuck to hide the taste of rot, in my Grandmother's time, before refrigerators were generally available. She had taught her daughters the same without explaining why and they had just blindly followed.

At least we convinced her to stop adding what must have been near a cup of salt to every meal.
