Ignorance
I once was in a programming class where the task was "build a calculator". A student did one with buttons 1, 2, 3 all the way up to about 25 and then ran out of space on the screen. We've asked this before but liked it so much we're asking again: What's the best example of ignorance you've encountered?

Just be affirmative with fact, and the hassle will melt away
I've never actually had hassle off cops themselves even during demonstrations that have turned ugly. Part of this boils down to a generally polite, non-confrontation manor. I was on one of those recent student demos that got out of hand and at one point a cop held one of my cameras whilst I packed another away. Apparently his dad was a photographer or so he was telling me. But he helped me out
Security guards tend to be typically a different mentality; they are the grunts of those buildings they guard just behind cleaning contractors, so can get a bit Nazi on members of the public, seemingly as some anecdote to the boredom of their jobs.
If you keep your cool and explain to them what is the actual law, I've found any hassle evaporates away, in my personal experience.
