I read Hotel du Laca few years back. I'm not sure why I finished it as I'm sure I was suffering more from the dullness of the book than the protagonist was in her life.
Maybe that was the point of the writing style.
Edit: I could have sworn that you had Anita Brookner in the list. My bad.
