Pavane by Keith Roberts -- alt-history 1968 England.
and The Difference Engine by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling {took me a good long while to realize that Sterling was the one whose work I really liked. An Old Fashioned Future is quite droll.
So is Tim Powers's The Anubis Gates.
