I liked the mix of sci-fi and horror.
In The Night's Dawn trilogy, I thought the genius was really the horror part of the plot allowed anyone from history to be a character. Much as I loved Pandora's Star, I still think The Night's dawn is his best work.
It is a beast, though. I wonder how many trees died for those books.

many many trees.
Unfortunately I lent out my first copies of Nights Dawn and never got them back so I re-purchased them. Sorry trees.
