I think you have to be the right age to read it
I picked it up when I was 15 and struggled for ages to get past the first few chapters, eventually giving up. Then when I was about 20, I was home from university and my sister had left a copy in the bathroom. Four hours later, my bathwater was freezing, my skin was shrivelled like a prune's ballbag and I was still frantically devouring page after page...
