I think, in general, Model Railways are instead of contact with the opposite sex
Of course, I was only 12 at the time.

When I got a bit older, I discovered that computers were a *much* better substitute for contact with the opposite sex.

Given that many permanent layouts are designed so the 'driver' stands in the middle surrounded/protected by their tracks.
