Aye, european cars have it wrong.
You should be able to change gears and indicate at the same time.

Got the job of driving a Mercedes van across town one Sunday for a mate
White of course.
The wipers and indicators were on opposite sides of the wheel from my old Mercedes sedan.
It took me about three corners to get used to the idea. Next one I got it right, but backslid on the fifth.
