I had one of those!Bought it near new, the hatchback version. Kept it for 16 years, you can't kill them with a stick. Eventually sold it to a colleague, he resprayed it, kept it another six years then gave it to his son-in-law. As far as I know it is still on the road.
Your ex was an idiot and probably still is.

I saw mine several years after he'd done the dirty deed down in Launceston in Cornwall - still running well.
