It's funny, isn't it...With the old cars we tended to take near-death experiences as part of the ride.
Door lock goes - oh well, I'll use the passenger one.
Brakes go - oh well, I'll use the hand-brake for the rest of my 50-mile journey.
Petrol tank explodes - oh well, I'll coast the rest of the way on the momentum.
Get any of that in a newer car and you'd think it was a real death-trap and never go in it again. Your expectations are much higher, I suppose!
