I pretend thatrather than having forgotten something, I've suddenly come up with a brilliant idea. Just point your index finger skyward and say, "A-ha!" loudly enough for people to hear, before spinning on your heel and walking back whence you came.
It's like when you trip on a paving stone. I conceal my embarrassment by breaking into a jog and not stopping until I'm out of sight.

These aretwo great ideas, I don't know why they haven't occured to me! I'm usualy worried that people won't realise that I've suddenly changed direction because I've forgotten something but will think I'm a mental person patroling the bottom 2/3rds of my road...
