This is...
...a prime example of The Game's "Peacock Theory" - the principle being that if you wear something that stands out a lot (or similar, like a tattoo or indeed a piercing) - then it's an immediate talking point.
Having something around the lips is perfect, as if your potential snogger mentions it then the association between lips and kissing is obvious.
I had similar success with wearing a medal at a festival. This led to the inevitable question "what's the medal for?" - to which a suitable answer was prepared.
I should probably just post a proper reply to the question.

Exactly, I used to wear a toy keychain on my watch. Not only does it give girls a question to start talking to me with, "Why do you have a fluffy frog hanging from your watch? It's cute.", but it also used to get me served first time at the bar, as I'd wave my arm around and the toy would catch the bartender's eye.
