This is a question Cheap Tat

OneEyedMonster remindes us about the crap you can buy in pound shops: "Batteries that lasted about an hour and then died. A screwdriver with a loose handle so I couldn't turn the damn screw, and a tape measure which wasn't at all accurate."

Similarly, my neighbour bought a lawnmower from Argos that was so cheap the wheels didn't go round, it sort of skidded over the grass whilst gently back-combing it.

What's the cheapest, most useless crap you've bought?

Me, and my unforetunate torch...
I got a brilliant, if rather unusual christmas present a couple of years back.. A rechargable torch.

It is geniunely handy in one way. It is rechargable, and you charge it by shaking it. So, good in a power cut.

Trouble is, you charge it by holding it at a 90 degree angle to your body, and shake it length ways. If anyone (as happened to me when I tried it) is looking at you but not really taking much notice, you tend to look like you are wanking.

The other problem is that to get more than 30 seconds of charge, you have to do this for almost 5 minutes.

You can get wind up ones
but in dim light it doesn't look much better.

I love those!
Last year I was going to get one for Dad for Christmas but they were all sold out everywhere. When my sister asked what I was trying to buy for Dad I replied, "A wank light."

She about choked on her chardonnay.

I hate those things...
I got one last year, and realised that when I held it up to my monitor it made the image go funny. So I started playing with it to see what I could get my screen to do. Anyway, to cut a long story short I ended up needing a new monitor. I maybe should have entered that in last weeks comp. Ah well

Magnets
Ahh, made the monitor screwy due to the magnet. Guessing it was cathode ray tube and not a shiny LCD then (remember messing with degauss buttons?).

Those torches apply a very neat trick by moving a magnet through a coil of wires, which causes current to flow in the wire. However, as mentioned above, it's not much current and the torches are shite.

Yes, I believe they work on the Faraday Principal.
I knew how it worked. I knew it had a dirty great big magnet in it. I knew it would fuck my monitor up if I held it next to it. But it was like, you know when someone tells you not to touch something because its hot.

I found out about the magnet when...
I picked it up and all my pennies came with it. Much fun was to be had by pulling the magnet up and down with little coins ^-^
