I thought this too!I imagined 'wanking' to be particularly flamboyant sex which involved the participants swinging from side to side, as you'd move if you stood with your legs apart and then rocked from one foot to the other. This image was planted in my mind from a Smith and Jones sketch, in which an overly-jolly advertising jingle went "Wanky wanky wanky wank / Join the National Friendly Bank".
