I was once involved in a conversation that got as far as "African American ... ummm ... English?" at which point it was explained that the person in question was actually from French Guiana so "African" would probably sufficeand then we all agreed to prematurely terminate our interlocution and go our separate ways before the poor Americans suffered some sort of thrombosis of the forehead over the idea that there French Africans.
