It's not that unusualI killed goldfish and dissected them at that age. My friend and I also put her pet mice on a blanket and tossed them up in the air, like a trampoline (just a few inches, they all fell back on the blanket and weren't hurt, probably just terrified). Up until about age 6 or 7, kids really don't have much empathy for animals. That part of the brain hasn't developed much yet, so their idea of "playing" with animals can be pretty cruel. Personally, I don't think kids should even have pets until they're a bit older because of stuff like that.
