What captivated me enough to read it (a few years ago at least) is the detail.I was torn between thinking "I hope this guy gets his medication now." and "That sounds plausible if you don't know much about sound propagation".
Sorry to those who have read it I ought to admit I haven't read it for a couple of years so it may have got longer and/or odder.
