This conveniently ignores the fact
that Americans have been strongly attached to their guns since they arrived on this continent. Guns are cool and fun as well as dangerous, and a society where their ownership is widespread might rationally choose not to let the state take them away. Even if there are unfortunate side effects.

I highly recommend a visit to the NRA (National Rifle Association) Museum in Northern Virginia. Love em or hate em, you will have a better understanding of gun owners and their politics.
