This is a question Hotel Splendido

Enzyme writes, "what about awful hotels, B&Bs, or friends' houses where you've had no choice but to stay the night?"

What, the place in Oxford that had the mattresses encased in plastic (crinkly noises all night), the place in Blackpool where the night manager would drum to the music on his ipod on the corridor walls as he did his rounds, or the place in Lancaster where the two single beds(!) collapsed through metal fatigue?

Add your crappy hotel experiences to our list.

Respect
Maybe I'm just strange or something, but I treat everybody with the same respect and dignity regardless of who they are and their position. Whether they're a porter, cleaner, brain surgeon or CEO of a multinational, I'll treat them exactly the same.

Even though often it's their job, I intensely dislike anyone doing something for me that I'm perfectly capable of doing myself - I get both embarrassed and offended. It seems to me to be some sort of unfortunate throwback to the age of servants and slavery.

So, if I'm staying in a hotel, I tend to get strange looks from the staff when i insist on taking my own cases to my room, polishing my own shoes, hailing my own taxi and ironing my own shirts.

But what irritates me more than ever is the whinging tossers with overinflated senses of self-importance berating these staff for not ironing their shirt/fastening their tie/wiping their arse/whatever whim takes their fancy.
