This is a question Cringe!

Chickenlady winces, "I told a Hugh Grant/Divine Brown joke to my dad, pretending that Ms Brown was chewing gum so she'd be more American. Instead I just appeared to be still giving the blow-job. Even as I'm writing this I'm cringing inside."

Tell us your cringeworthy stories of embarrassment. Go on, you're amongst friends here...

My older brother..
is autistic and I've had friends who've told me jokes about mentally disabled people, or whatever the PC term is these days, and they've done the 'OMG D:' double take on realising. Usually I'm laughing too hard to notice. Don't get me wrong, I love my brother to bits, but I still find those jokes funny. I only get pissed off when people callously insult people like my brother. I'm sure your friend will accept an apology in the future, especially since you do seem really bad about it.

I've got the feeling
that there's probably something deeper causing the rift which he's veiled behind this 'convenient' incident.

However, he was a good mate and it's still worth trying to patch up.
