Sleep Paralysis.
It's the body's way of stopping you acting out your dreams. Simple as that. It's a bit disconcerting when it happens though, but now you know what it is hopefully it won't be so bad.

Wiggling your toes...
(or trying to swallow) is the best thing to do - it affects the big muscles the most, so toe wiggling is a way to tell your body that you'd really much rather it stopped what it was doing, thank you.

Maybe dangerous if you have a cat though
