I just can't do power tools. They always fly out of control and end up embedded somewhere they shouldn't. I've no idea how I've still got all the appendages I was born with.
Add to that the fact that nothing ends up square, able to support weight or free of sticking-out sharp bits and you can see why I try to avoid DIY.

Pine.
Best stuff on earth. It is light-weight, strong, durable, and versitile. You can build some amazing pieces of furniature with it. And you can fake the look of a number of other woods with the right combination of stains or paints. Sand it smooth for a faux marble finish or distress it to look like worm-wood.
Pine is a beauty to behold.
14 years of using Pine and loving it.

I've heard it can be quite stiff if over-worked.
Edit - I've been told it gets softer if over-worked. My mistake. I'm obviously getting it mixed up with another wood.

including polishing it........
But I wouldn't want to use it to build a set of shelves.

I took a leaf out of your book the other day by sending a rather naive colleague of mine down to the local store for some "morning wood sauce". I told him it came from the hottest pepper in the world, which was pinkish in colour, about 8-10 inches long, cylindrical, with a purple tip. Yes, I am a git.

Is that durable, it'll mark or gouge if you so much as look at it.
Other than that, it's pretty good.
I'll take my hardwood over your softwood any day though *ahem*
