My usual routeis to go down Rte 12 to Binghamton, then 81 to Winchester VA and across 17 to 95. It's a few miles more, but it avoids the I-95 Parking Lot north of Fredericksburg and is a much prettier drive.
At least Pennsylvania has gotten better about when to rip up 81. There was a time when you hit construction at the Maryland border and stayed in construction zones through to New York. Currently only about 50% of it is being redone. Apparently that's the main industry of the state...
