Why would he be taking hay to a field?

Oh dear.
As any 4-year-old will tell you, fields have grass in. That's what cows eat when they're outside. Even if you did want to feed your cattle hay, you un-bale it first to make sure the cows don't choke on the twine.
Hay is kept in a nice dry loft for winter when there's not enough eating matter.
